چکیده مقاله
Objective: The increasing use of supplementary textbooks in secondary education has intensified the need to identify the factors driving this trend. This study aimed to develop and test a structural model of the factors influencing the utilization of supplementary textbooks among senior high school students.
Method: This study employed a mixed-methods research design. In the qualitative phase, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. In the quantitative phase, data were gathered via a researcher-developed questionnaire and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The statistical population comprised senior high school students in Hormozgan Province. Purposeful sampling was utilized for the qualitative phase, while proportionate stratified random sampling was applied for the quantitative phase.
Results: Qualitative findings identified six overarching themes: individual, institutional (school-related), familial, textbook-related, university entrance exam (Konkur)-related, and macro-level factors. The structural model results indicated that the perceived positive functionality of supplementary textbooks, individual factors, and accessibility exerted a direct and significant impact on the extent of usage. Collectively, these factors accounted for 58% of the variance in textbook usage. Furthermore, social and contextual factors influenced usage only indirectly, mediated by individual factors.
Conclusions: The findings suggest that mitigating the adverse effects of excessive reliance on supplementary textbooks requires a profound examination of multifaceted causes. Recommended interventions include addressing economic disparities and income inequality across professions, reforming the university admission system, enhancing the quality of the formal educational system, and revising textbook publishing regulations. These insights provide a framework for educational policymaking and the strategic management of supplementary material usage.
