چکیده مقاله
Climate change is a global issue affecting the environment, human well-being, and sustainable development. It has severe effects on water, air, and soil quality that directly and indirectly affect sustainable agriculture. All these assets influence agricultural communities, which leads to physical and psychological health, human rights, social justice, and economic stability in vulnerable rural areas. In this regard, climate change also poses threats to vulnerable populations and individuals with preexisting mental illnesses, leading to increased stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and suicidal ideation. Therefore, mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change is crucial. This chapter provides an overview of the causes, effects, opportunities, challenges, and strategies for minimizing environmental quality disruption; sustaining agriculture in rural communities, and consequently reducing the mental well-being impacts of the climate change phenomenon. It also addresses the effects of climate change on sustainable development in agricultural climate change-affected communities and the role of policymakers and institutions in addressing mental health impacts. Climate change is a complex issue requiring a multidisciplinary and collaborative response from various stakeholders, including scientists, practitioners, policymakers, and civil society. Collaboration among these stakeholders is essential for developing effective mitigation and adaptation strategies. Additionally, public awareness and education play a vital role in fostering understanding and action toward addressing the psychological impacts of climate change. © 2026 Elsevier Ltd.
