چکیده مقاله

As global water scarcity continues to rise, water desalination has become increasingly important. The process of desalinating water involves removing minerals and salts from saline water in order to obtain fresh water for agriculture and human consumption. In traditional desalination methods, such as reverse osmosis, multi-stage flash, and electrodialysis, energy is costly, and environmental impacts are significant. An innovative approach to overcoming these challenges has emerged in recent years through nanotechnology. Functionalized nanostructures, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene oxide (GO), zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and nanoporous gold (np-Au), have shown great potential in water desalination due to their unique properties and precise control over their characteristics. They can be incorporated into various parts of the desalination process, including membrane-based and thermal desalination techniques. CNTs, for instance, enhance water flux in RO membranes, while GO membranes demonstrate exceptional salt rejection capabilities. Photothermal nanomaterials, for example plasmonic nanoparticles and carbon-based nanomaterials, convert solar energy into heat, providing an energy-efficient method for desalination. Despite the promising potential of functionalized nanostructures, challenges such as stability in saline environments, scalability, and environmental impacts must be addressed through further research. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
